What is OptiLight?

OptiLight by Lumenis is the first and only FDA-approved light-based treatment that treats dry eye syndrome caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The essential oils secreted by the meibomian glands into the tears prevent the tears from evaporating. MGD is the leading cause of dry eye syndrome, accounting for over 80% of dry eye cases.

How Does OptiLight Work?

OptiLight works by reducing abnormal blood vessels and inflammatory properties around the eye area. It also applies gentle, safe heat to the eyelids so that any hardened oils stuck in the meibomian glands can be expressed. When the meibomian glands are cleared of debris and old oils, they’re able to function properly and keep the eyes feeling lubricated and healthy.

Optilight also greatly reduces the amount of Demodex mites that can lead to eyelid inflammation and uncomfortable dry eye symptoms.

What is OPT™ Technology?

The scientists at Lumenis patented OPT™ technology (optimal pulse technology) to allow light to be used in a precise, safe, uniform and controlled manner. This gentle and effective technology was specifically designed for the delicate tissues around the eye.

What’s Involved in an OptiLight Treatment?

A typical and complete OptiLight treatment consists of 4 in-office sessions, each lasting only 10-15 minutes. The sessions are spaced 2-4 weeks apart.

Each session will begin with your eye doctor placing protective shields over your eyes and applying a gel to the treatment area. Then pulsed light is painlessly applied to the skin around the eyes. After the OptiLight treatment, your eye doctor will express your meibomian glands of any old and hardened oils. This will allow the glands to secrete the oils that the tears need to keep the eyes hydrated.

What Should You Expect After Treatment?

After treatment, you’ll be able to resume your daily activities immediately, with no downtime. Some patients will experience redness at the treatment area, which typically clears up within a few hours.

You should stay out of direct sunlight for a few days following each treatment and apply sunscreen to the treatment area.

Patients typically experience an improvement in their condition within 2 or 3 treatments. Maintenance sessions are recommended every 6 months to a year.

Is OptiLight for Everyone?

Patients with certain medical conditions may be advised not to undergo OptiLight treatments. Some examples of incompatible medical conditions are uncontrolled infections or lesions in the treatment area, recent radiation therapy in the head or neck, uncontrolled ocular surface disorders and lupus. Speak with your eye doctor to determine whether OptiLight is suitable for you.
