What is Dry Eye Syndrome?
Dry eye syndrome is a multifactorial condition that can cause blurry vision, eye discomfort and even permanent eye damage, if left untreated.
Most cases of DES are caused by the dysfunction of the meibomian glands in the eyelids, which secrete vital oils into the tears. Other causes include environmental irritants, hormonal changes, excessive screen time, certain medical conditions and medications, aging, and wearing contact lenses. Many of these trigger chronic eye inflammation.
Symptoms of DES range from mildly uncomfortable to debilitating, and typically include:
- Red, dry eyes
- Painful or sore eyes
- Gritty eyes
- Watery eyes
- Mucus discharge around the eyelashes
- Sensitivity to light
- Blurred vision
Treatment for DES will depend on the cause of your symptoms, which is why a dry eye consultation is crucial for anyone suffering from the above symptoms.
OptiLight targets eye inflammation and the problems preventing the eyelid glands from functioning properly.
What is OptiLight?
OptiLight by Lumenis is an in-office IPL treatment that has been shown to reduce DES symptoms.
The full treatment contains 4 sessions, each spaced 2-4 weeks apart. Each session takes about 10-15 minutes to complete and is non-invasive, so you’ll be able to return to your routine straight away.
How Does OptiLight Improve Dry Eye Syndrome?
OptiLight improves DES in 5 main ways:
- Reduces inflammatory mediators that contribute to dry eyes
- Significantly improves tear breakup time, so your tear film will stay stable longer
- Removes a significant amount of Demodex mites that cause blepharitis (eyelid inflammation)
- Destroys abnormal blood vessels around the eye area that supply the eye with inflammatory agents
- Helps restore the meibomian glands so they can function properly to lubricate the eye’s surface
